Everyday Healthcare Heroes: Skylar Wright

Meet travel ER nurse Skylar Wright

Meet travel ER nurse Skylar Wright

This past year we have asked more of our nurses than ever before—as they joined with other healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic. On this National Nurses Day, we are grateful to Skylar Wright and all the nurses among us, and honor them for the critical role they play in keeping our communities healthy.

What is your job title and what do you do at work?
I’m a travel Emergency room nurse and my day ranges from working with patients with basic low-level emergencies to high-level trauma patients.

Where do you work?
As a travel nurse, I move every 3 months to different ER jobs around the US. I’m currently working in South Miami, Florida. Previously I was in Charlotte, North Carolina.

What is the thing you are most excited to do when life resumes back to 'normal'?
When life returns back to normal, I will be so happy to safely be around people again. I can’t wait to go to concerts, baseball games, and spending time with friends and family.

What is the most memorable moment or key lesson learned from the past year?

With my job in general, I have learned that life is short and to enjoy every moment. Especially with Covid, I have learned to appreciate the time I am able to spend with people that I love.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is working with all different patients and coworkers from all different backgrounds and hearing their stories. I also have a unique opportunity to meet new coworkers every 3 months when I start a new contract. I love getting to know new people and have already made so many great friends while traveling.

When you are not caring for others, how do you practice self care?

When I am not at work, I’m always trying to find new things to do and places to see. I usually take bike rides and walks through the new areas that I live in. One of my other favorite things to do is finding new coffee shops in each city.

What message would you share with the DOLAN community?

I would just say that anything is possible and to always follow your dreams! I went to nursing school and quickly learned that I wanted to do travel nursing for my career. Even with a pandemic, I was able to follow my dreams and start travel nursing, seeing new places, and helping each community I’m a part of.
