Can You Hem Scrub Pants? How to Shorten Them Without Changing the Fit

Yes, most scrub pants can be hemmed—and DOLAN hems all of our scrub pants for free, including joggers with ankle cuffs. The method depends on the leg shape, but you shouldn't have to settle for pants that are too long.

A simple straight leg is usually the easiest. A jogger with a fitted ankle cuff takes more work because the cuff needs to be preserved. And a wide leg or flare may look different once you move the hem higher up the pant.

Want DOLAN to handle the hemming? Choose the style and size that fit your body, then email hello@shopdolan.com with your desired inseam so our team can help coordinate the free alteration.

Here's what to check before choosing your finished length.

First, make sure the length is the actual problem

If your pants fit at the waist, hips, seat and thigh but puddle around your shoes, that's a length issue. Don't size down to shorten them. A smaller size can change the fit everywhere else.

Instead, check whether the same pant comes in a shorter inseam. For example, DOLAN's District straight-leg pants offer multiple lengths, and the size guide notes that the body fit stays consistent across inseam lengths. DOLAN can hem these pants for free if you need a different length. Check our size guide to compare sizes without changing the fit through your waist and hips.

It's easier to choose the right length at checkout than to alter a pair that already fits.

If you're deciding between the length options, our petite vs. regular scrub pants inseam guide walks through where each hem should land.

Is free hemming available for all DOLAN scrub pant styles?

Yes. DOLAN offers complimentary hemming on all of our scrub pants, including District straight-leg pants, Palos wide-leg pants and Hope joggers with ankle cuffs. A jogger takes extra work because the cuff needs to be handled carefully, but that does not exclude it from our free hemming service.

Our advice: select the pant that fits your waist, hips and thighs first. Choose the closest available inseam and contact hello@shopdolan.com with the finished inseam you need so our team can coordinate the adjustment. Please confirm any alteration or return details with the team before the work is done.

How to measure for a scrub pants hem

1. Put on your work shoes. A sneaker's sole height changes where the pant should end.

2. Stand naturally. Avoid pulling the waistband up higher than you'll actually wear it.

3. Fold the excess fabric inward to the desired finished length and pin or clip it.

4. Walk, sit and bend to make sure the hem still works in motion.

5. Measure both legs. Then mark the finished hem line before deciding how much fabric to cut.

The finished length and the cutting line are not the same thing—you need an allowance to fold and stitch the new hem. If you haven't hemmed stretch fabric before, a tailor is a sensible choice.

Can you hem every style of scrub pant?

Pant style

What to know

Straight leg

Usually the simplest. Keep the original hem width and a level finish.

Tapered leg

Shortening moves the opening higher up the taper, sometimes making it wider.

Wide leg

Check how the new length affects drape and where the volume falls.

Flared leg

Removing length can remove part of the flare and change the intended proportion.

Cuffed jogger

Often requires removing, repositioning and reattaching the cuff.

That last one matters. With a cuffed jogger such as DOLAN's Hope, cutting above the cuff and making a standard folded hem changes the entire look. You'd lose the fitted ankle finish that makes it a jogger.

Can you hem stretch scrub fabric at home?

You can, if you know your fabric and machine. Many scrub fabrics contain spandex. A stitch that has no give may pop when the garment stretches, so the stitch type and thread need to suit the material.

Test on a hidden allowance or scrap before hemming the actual garment. Don't iron blindly at a high temperature: follow the care label so you don't damage the finish.

If the pants are expensive to replace, the hem shape is complicated, or you don't sew regularly, a professional alteration is usually a better investment than experimenting on your favorite pair.

When to choose a tailor instead

A professional alteration makes sense for jogger cuffs, complicated cargo hems, major shortening on a flare or unfamiliar fabric. Ask whoever is hemming them to preserve the original silhouette, not simply make the pants shorter.

Does DOLAN hem scrub pants for free?

Yes. DOLAN offers free hemming on every scrub pant style—straight-leg District, wide-leg Palos and cuffed Hope joggers included. We know that even a well-fitting waistband and hip mean little if the inseam is wrong. The cuffed joggers require extra care, but they're included in the service.

Choose your pant style and fit, then email hello@shopdolan.com with the finished inseam you need; our team can coordinate the alteration. Don’t assume a standard jogger hem will work for a cuffed style.

Frequently asked questions

Does hemming scrub pants change the waist or hip fit?

A standard hem shouldn't alter those areas. But changing the bottom opening can affect how tapered, wide-leg or flared pants hang.

Can you turn cuffed jogger scrubs into regular pants?

It may be possible, but you'll change the design and potentially the ankle opening. For a true jogger finish, preserve or reattach the cuff.

Should I hem my scrubs or buy petite?

If a shorter inseam is offered in the same body fit, start there. Petite-length pants avoid an extra alteration; separately check whether a brand's petite styles also change the rise or other proportions.

The best hem should be almost invisible. You want the pants you loved in the fitting room—just the right length. At DOLAN, we'll take care of that adjustment for free.
